Lithium-Ion Battery Solutions

Safer, More Efficient, Simpler Solutions for Lithium-Ion Batteries

What are VRES?

Jolt Energy’s Voltage Regulating Electrochemical Shunts (VRES) manage Lithium-Ion battery charging by capping cell voltage at a predetermined value while still allowing the passage of current at full charge without damage. In other words, VRES technology allows batteries to harmlessly dissipate excess charge, which prevents the batteries from the kind of overcharging that would result in high heat or an explosion.

Our VRES additives are exceptionally stable, and operate at much higher voltages than previous attempts in the field, which enables manufacturers to save cost with smaller batteries, simpler battery management systems, and safer batteries.

The VRES additive does not affect battery operation until the “turn-on” voltage is reached.  Maximum cell voltage is capped at this level.

The Science behind VRES

Voltage Regulating Electrochemical Shunts or VRES function by capping lithium-ion battery cell voltage at a predetermined value while still allowing the passage of a current at full charge without damage. Thus, VRES materials are designed with a turn-on voltage just above the maximum design voltage for a cell and constitute an effective safeguard against overvoltage. Moreover, because VRES compounds can simplify state-of-charge measurement and control, they offer the opportunity to reduce the cost and complexity of the battery management system’s hardware and software.

VRES additives are organic molecules that are exceptionally stable and undergo electrochemical oxidation at the cathode, but only at voltages slightly above the maximum cell voltage (approximate 4.2 V for many types of modern lithium ion batteries). The oxidized form of the shuttle is also extremely stable, and travels to the anode to pick up an electron, completing the circuit and effectively shunting away the excess charging current.

Importantly, incorporation of VRES additives requires no other changes to the battery materials, electrolyte, or manufacturing process. Further, because the VRES materials are only activated at 100% state-of-charge, their presence does not affect normal battery performance during discharge.
